Beneath the bright parades, chirpy music, and retrofuturist gadgets sits a bleak story about trauma, guilt, and a society determined to forget what it has done. The tone shifts smoothly between dark satire, tense paranoia, and surprisingly personal drama.

You play through the connected stories of Arthur Hastings, Sally Boyle, and Ollie Starkey, three fugitives with different skills, motives, and approaches to escaping the city. Staying alive means managing hunger, thirst, exhaustion, illness, and suspicion while scavenging abandoned homes, crafting tools and healing items, completing quests, and navigating hostile districts. Conflict supports brawling, stealth, improvised weapons, and escape, though charging headfirst into a crowd usually ends badly. Social camouflage matters just as much as combat: wear the right clothes, obey local behavior, and take Joy when required, or risk being exposed as a dangerous “Downer.”

What separates We Happy Few from standard survival games is its relentless pressure to perform normality in an environment that is fundamentally insane. Each protagonist’s campaign reveals new areas, mechanics, and sides of Wellington Wells’ history, giving the narrative more weight than a simple procedural scavenging sandbox. Its semi-randomized streets and resource placement keep repeat attempts uncertain, while handcrafted story missions provide the stronger reason to continue. Players who enjoy BioShock’s dystopian atmosphere, Dishonored-style sneaking, and survival systems with consequences find plenty to appreciate, provided they can tolerate some rough edges and deliberately uncomfortable themes.
