The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered updates Bethesda’s 2006 classic with dramatically sharper environments, modern lighting, rebuilt character presentation, and smoother-feeling play while preserving its strange, ambitious identity. You begin as an unknown prisoner caught in a crisis that threatens all of Tamriel, then quickly gain the freedom to ignore the main quest for guild work, treasure hunting, burglary, arena battles, or aimless travel. The mood shifts effortlessly between heroic high fantasy, cosy tavern life, and the surreal menace of the Daedric realms.

Character creation lets you build almost any kind of adventurer, from heavily armoured sword-and-shield fighters to stealthy thieves, summoners, archers, and spell-slinging hybrids. Combat combines melee attacks, bows, shields, blocking, and an enormous collection of spells, while the flexible skill-based advancement system rewards the activities you actually practice. Quests take you through forts, caves, haunted ruins, noble estates, and the fiery planes of Oblivion, with lockpicking, persuasion, alchemy, enchanting, and faction storylines adding depth beyond combat. Difficulty can be adjusted, and the included Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine expansions greatly expand the campaign with new regions, equipment, and self-contained adventures.

What still separates Oblivion from later open-world RPGs is its wonderfully unpredictable simulation: NPCs follow routines, conversations can become bizarre, and a short detour often turns into a memorable side story. Its world is less harsh than Skyrim’s northern wilderness and more colourful than many modern dark-fantasy games, making exploration feel warm, eccentric, and constantly rewarding. Shivering Isles in particular delivers a wildly imaginative contrast to Cyrodiil, full of manic humour and unsettling fantasy imagery. Anyone who enjoys Skyrim, Fallout, Dragon Age, or player-led RPG freedom finds plenty to love here, while veterans get the familiar adventure in a far more polished form.
