Tamarin (v1.2)

A tiny tamarin takes on an industrial insect army in a curious blend of cheerful woodland platforming and surprisingly somber environmental storytelling. Set across lakes, forests, snowy ridges, and underground facilities inspired by Nordic landscapes, Tamarin follows its nimble hero after his peaceful home is devastated by pollution and invading bugs. The contrast is its defining mood: one moment feels like a colorful late-1990s console adventure, while the next turns into a bleak fight against machines, toxic waste, and swarming enemies. Its compact world gives the journey a personal focus, centered on protecting the monkey’s family rather than saving a generic fantasy kingdom.

Movement drives much of the experience, with the tamarin sprinting, climbing, double-jumping, swinging, and bouncing through interconnected areas full of secret routes and collectibles. Combat uses an expanding selection of firearms to clear out ants, beetles, mosquitoes, and larger mechanical threats, making the game part third-person shooter as well as a platformer. Exploration opens paths to new regions and revisiting earlier zones can uncover missed items, while environmental hazards and enemy encounters keep players alert. There is no co-op or competitive mode; the emphasis stays on a single-player adventure that mixes traversal challenges with straightforward arcade-style shooting.

Tamarin stands out because it carries the DNA of classic Rare-era 3D platformers without simply copying their tone. Its stylized animal hero, bright natural vistas, and collectible hunting recall games such as Banjo-Kazooie, but its guns, ecological themes, and occasionally eerie presentation give it a stranger edge. The world is not enormous, yet its connected design rewards curiosity more than a purely linear action game does. Players who miss inventive mascot platformers and do not mind some old-school roughness in camera and combat design should find plenty to like, while genre veterans will appreciate its unusual attempt to fuse platforming exploration with shooter action.
