You play Starter, a young Kewtian who reboots after decades offline to find his memory fractured and his systems crippled by an unknown virus. Guided by the digital pair M01 and F01, he crosses the varied regions of Tanrega to uncover the truth behind an ancient war and prevent a new catastrophe. The tone mixes playful character encounters and vivid scenery with a steadily more serious mystery about identity, technology, and survival.

Progress revolves around pushing through interconnected areas, beating enemies and bosses, and returning to previously inaccessible routes once new abilities and equipment open them up. Nine weapons provide different practical roles in combat, and upgrades make Starter increasingly capable of handling the game’s rapid, demanding encounters. Bosses are the main attraction, with more than forty fights that ask players to learn attack patterns, manage space, and use their growing arsenal intelligently rather than simply overpowering opponents. Difficulty options range from a forgiving setting for players focused on story and exploration to a punishing Brutal mode for veterans who want every mistake to matter.

Super Gear Quest stands out through its unusually boss-heavy take on the Metroidvania formula and its willingness to make narrative perspective part of the adventure, letting players take control of both Starter and the Avatar Duo at key points. Its colorful environments, distinct regional music, strange supporting cast, and branching conclusions give the journey more personality than a straightforward map-clearing exercise.
