The tone balances genuine Lovecraftian unease with strange, darkly comic Soviet-era surrealism.

Players shape a specialist rather than following a fixed combat class: a psychic soldier, nimble weapons expert, or hacking-oriented gunfighter all approach threats and obstacles differently. Progress means searching four dangerous decks for firearms, ammunition, access routes, secrets, and upgrades while piecing together why the vessel falls to a supernatural infestation. Automatic pistols, harpoon launchers, and flamethrowers give combat some welcome variety, but dwindling resources make reckless shooting a bad habit. Sanity management adds pressure when eldritch creatures close in, while hidden passages, movable bookcases, vents, and optional detours reward methodical scavenging over a straight sprint to the objective.

What makes Sonar Shock appealing is its willingness to make the submarine feel like a bizarre little society instead of a simple monster maze. Crew members can be questioned, traded with, and gossiped about, and side stories range from criminal investigations involving Detective Sherlock Holmes to treasure hunts and a haunted cathedral crypt. Enemy designs pull from both cosmic horror and Slavic myth, so encounters with Shoggoths and Rusalkas give the setting an identity beyond standard zombies-and-corridors horror. Fans of System Shock, Deus Ex-era role-playing freedom, or survival horror with eccentric worldbuilding should find plenty to enjoy, especially if they value secrets and atmosphere over polished blockbuster pacing.
