A cramped fallout shelter becomes the last fragile line between an ordinary family and a merciless nuclear wasteland. Sheltered is a side-on survival management game built around dwindling food, contaminated water, failing equipment, and the emotional strain of living underground after civilization collapses. Its cartoon-like pixel art softens the initial impression, but the mood stays tense: every quiet day can turn into a crisis when radiation leaks in, a stranger arrives at the hatch, or a family member fails to return from the surface. Survival rarely feels heroic here; it feels like making the least terrible choice with what little remains.

Players begin by shaping a family and assigning its members to the chores that keep the bunker functioning. Water must be filtered, air and power systems maintained, meals cooked, crops grown, and broken rooms repaired before neglect becomes fatal. Expeditions send one or more survivors across a randomly generated map to search ruined locations for supplies, trade with other people, or fight through dangerous encounters using turn-based combat and improvised weapons. Needs extend beyond hunger and thirst, as characters also suffer fatigue, injury, trauma, radiation exposure, and declining morale, making careful planning more valuable than reckless scavenging.

What separates Sheltered from many apocalypse games is its focus on domestic survival rather than building an empire or mowing down monsters. A pet, a child, and a barely functioning shower can matter as much as a weapon, while the game’s ethical decisions create stories that feel personal instead of scripted. Randomized maps, encounters, recruits, and shelter layouts give repeated runs a different rhythm, though the interface can feel demanding when several emergencies hit at once. Fans of Fallout Shelter, This War of Mine, or RimWorld’s harsher survival stories should find plenty to like, especially if they enjoy slow-burning resource management where a single poor decision can end an entire family line.
