Illy Vraja’s summer in Transylvania begins as a family mystery and quickly turns into a magical coming-of-age story. Invited by her enigmatic Great-Aunt Domnica, the teenage protagonist learns she belongs to a witch bloodline and earns a place at the Transylvanian Institute for Magick. Near-Mage blends point-and-click adventure storytelling with light role-playing systems, placing its folklore-rich tale between real Sighișoara, the hidden settlement of Rakus, and an academy full of supernatural classmates. The mood balances dark fairy-tale atmosphere, local superstition, and colorful character-driven drama rather than leaning into outright horror.

Most of the adventure revolves around talking to residents, investigating strange situations, collecting clues, and deciding how Illy uses the magic she learns in class. Spell crafting is the main source of player expression: lessons and spellbook recipes let you build an inventory around different magical effects, then apply those effects to quests in potentially unexpected ways. A spell might solve a problem cleanly, alter someone’s memories, worsen their situation, or open a route that another build cannot access. Players can use a traditional cursor-driven interface or directly move Illy around the environments, with running and flying making travel feel more active than in many classic adventures.

Its strongest feature is the use of Transylvanian mythology created by developers who know the region’s history and legends firsthand. Vampyres, moroi, strigoi, ghouls, pricolitch, and other creatures are not merely monsters to defeat; they are people whose lives can change according to the player’s choices. Hand-painted 4K environments and frame-by-frame animation give the world a storybook look, while outfits and hairstyles allow some personal customization. Fans of narrative adventures such as Broken Age or modern point-and-click mysteries should appreciate the dialogue and branching quests, while RPG-minded players get enough build experimentation to justify repeat runs.
