A rain-soaked military prison on the Cuban coast becomes the stage for a compact but remarkably tense stealth operation. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes follows Big Boss in 1975 as he infiltrates Camp Omega to extract two prisoners whose survival threatens his offshore mercenary force. The mood is cold, methodical, and cinematic, balancing hushed reconnaissance with sudden bursts of violence when plans fail. Rather than offering a sprawling campaign, it delivers a concentrated prologue built around one densely detailed sandbox.

Players scout guard routes, tag enemies and equipment with binoculars, choose entry points, and decide whether to ghost through the compound or neutralize opposition using suppressed weapons, close-quarters combat, and distractions. Enemy alerts escalate quickly, making concealment, body placement, and quick escapes far more important than raw shooting skill. The central rescue mission can be finished quickly by experienced players, but side operations add assassination jobs, hostage rescues, surveillance objectives, and unusual challenge scenarios that encourage learning the map from every angle. Checkpoints are limited, while the Reflex Mode briefly slows time after detection, giving newcomers a chance to recover without removing the pressure entirely.

Ground Zeroes stands out through the Fox Engine’s convincing lighting, weather, facial animation, and seamless shift between gameplay and story sequences, all of which still give Camp Omega an oppressive sense of place. Its single-map structure is smaller than later open-world stealth games, yet that limitation becomes a strength: every checkpoint, searchlight, fence line, and guard patrol can be exploited on repeat runs. Audio logs and collectible material add context for series fans, while the mission rankings reward speed, restraint, and inventive tactics. Fans of Splinter Cell’s deliberate infiltration or The Phantom Pain’s player-driven stealth should find plenty to enjoy, though newcomers should treat it as a polished, replayable opening act rather than a full-length Metal Gear campaign.
