Game Overview

Shelmerston is a tiny island full of ordinary people, peculiar traditions, and buried memories, and its fate rests with a recently departed museum curator and his spectral dog. I Am Dead turns a potentially morbid premise into a warm, gently funny puzzle adventure about community, loss, and the stories people leave behind. Morris Lupton returns as a ghost just in time to learn that the island’s dormant volcano threatens to erase the home he loves. Reunited with Sparky, he searches the island’s past for a way to stop the disaster before Shelmerston disappears.

Play revolves around examining beautifully illustrated locations and using Morris’s ghostly ability to look through solid objects. Players zoom beneath walls, furniture, clothing, food, and personal keepsakes to uncover hidden layers, then follow clues that reveal a resident’s defining memories. Each investigation asks you to identify the right objects and details from a person’s life, gradually building a fuller picture of who they are and how they connect to the island’s history. Puzzles stay accessible rather than punishing, with progress driven more by observation, curiosity, and narrative deduction than inventory juggling or time pressure.

Richard Hogg’s hand-drawn art gives every home, shop, and eccentric local a tactile storybook personality, while the X-ray-like inspection mechanic makes even mundane clutter feel worth investigating. Rather than treating death as a source of horror, the game approaches it with empathy and an offbeat sense of humor, finding joy in favorite meals, embarrassing secrets, beloved pets, and small acts of kindness. Its compact structure makes it a strong choice for players who enjoy the calm discovery of Gone Home, the playful visual imagination of Hohokum, or narrative-focused adventures without combat. Patient explorers who like searching every corner for human details get the most from it, but newcomers to puzzle adventures can also finish it comfortably.
