Death is less a setback than the engine driving every climb up Sanctora Mountain. Heretical is a dark roguelite action RPG that mixes the measured danger of Soulslike combat with run-based progression, sending a succession of flawed heroes toward the stronghold of Abidan, a ruthless demigod who controls the region’s magical lifeblood. Sanctora sits cut off from the rest of Aelyndor, its mines, ruined faith, and looming manor giving the journey a grim fantasy atmosphere rather than a cheerful arcade feel. Each failed attempt feeds into the larger struggle, making defeat part of the story and the strategy.

Runs begin with a choice of heroes, each bringing different skills and proficiencies to the trek from the Sanctuary of the Forlorn toward Sanctora Manor. Combat revolves around learning enemy patterns, using acquired abilities intelligently, and adapting to bosses with their own attack sets instead of simply overpowering them through numbers. Looted weapons, gear, perks, core attributes, and rapid level-up selections combine to shape a build on the fly, while randomized drops ensure that a familiar character can play very differently from one attempt to the next. Between runs, permanent advancement through systems such as the Well of Stars and Prophecy Cards expands available powers, equipment, and mechanics, so progress continues even when a boss sends you back to the start.

What separates Heretical from a straightforward Soulslike is its emphasis on experimentation: a lost run can still reveal a useful combination, unlock a new hero, or open another avenue for future builds. Its route remains broadly linear, but the shifting gear pool and ability choices give the ascent enough variety to reward repeat attempts without requiring an enormous open world. Players who enjoy the buildcraft of Hades alongside the deliberate boss learning of modern Souls-inspired action RPGs should find plenty to work with here. Newcomers need patience for repeated failure, while roguelite veterans are likely to appreciate how much control they have over turning that failure into a stronger next run.
