Beneath the rain-soaked village of Tristram lies one of PC gaming’s most influential dungeon crawls, a compact descent into catacombs, caves, and hellish ruins where every door can hide gold, a quest, or sudden death. Diablo + Hellfire pairs Blizzard North’s gothic action-RPG classic with Synergistic Software’s unusual expansion, creating a bleak, claustrophobic adventure built around the corruption spreading below the town. Its mood is deliberately lonely and oppressive: villagers offer uneasy warnings, monsters howl behind closed doors, and the trek toward Diablo feels dangerous even when you know the route. Hellfire adds a separate, non-canonical threat in the demon Na-Krul, giving veterans another reason to revisit Tristram.

Play revolves around choosing a hero, venturing into randomized dungeon floors, killing monsters in real-time click-driven combat, and returning to town to sell loot, heal, and prepare for the next descent. The Warrior thrives in close quarters, the Rogue mixes bows with traps and magic, and the Sorcerer turns mana management into devastating spellcasting; Hellfire introduces the disciplined Monk, who blends melee speed with magical utility. Equipment upgrades matter, but survival depends just as much on cautious positioning, identifying items, saving potions, and knowing when an enemy pack is stronger than it looks. The original adventure supports multiplayer in its base form, while Hellfire’s additional campaign content is designed primarily for solo play.

What still stands out is the economy of its design: one small hub town, sixteen dungeon levels, and a relentlessly focused loot loop that helped define Diablo-like games for decades. Randomized layouts and item drops make fresh characters worthwhile, while the slower pace feels markedly more tactical than the screen-filling chaos of later Diablo entries. Hellfire is not essential to the main story, but its new class, locations, items, and Na-Krul quest make the package more complete. Anyone who enjoys dark fantasy, classic ARPG progression, or the roots of games like Path of Exile and Diablo II should find plenty to appreciate, though newcomers should expect an older interface and a harsher, less forgiving pace.
