Darkstar One (GOG)

A lone pilot inherits a living starship and spends the rest of the adventure carving out a future among hostile factions, strange species, and lawless trade routes. Darkstar One is an old-school space-combat RPG that favors player freedom over a tightly scripted march from mission to mission. Its galaxy feels broad rather than seamless, with story assignments pushing you toward new regions while side work lets you decide whether to be a principled mercenary, opportunistic trader, pirate, or smuggler. The tone mixes pulpy sci-fi melodrama with straightforward arcade dogfighting, supported by lengthy cinematic scenes that give the central revenge-and-discovery plot some weight.

Flying the Darkstar One means jumping between star systems, taking contracts, hunting bounties, escorting transports, moving cargo, and occasionally making enemies by preying on civilian shipping. Combat plays as accessible third-person space action: maneuver around opponents, manage shields, fire conventional guns and missiles, and use mines or torpedoes for more situational attacks. Credits buy equipment, but ancient artifacts found through exploration also evolve the ship itself, allowing major changes to its hull and capabilities. Progression supports sharply different builds, from nimble craft loaded with lighter weapons to lumbering armored bruisers built to absorb punishment and unleash heavy firepower.

The standout feature is the ship customization, especially the ability to combine gear and weapons associated with different alien cultures rather than following one fixed upgrade path. A special energy-based “spell” weapon adds a more fantastical tactical toolset and grows into several useful combat effects over time. Some missions break up open-space travel with atmospheric canyon runs or underground excursions, although the presentation and interface clearly reflect the game’s mid-2000s origins. Players who enjoy Freelancer, Privateer, or the more action-focused side of X space sims will find plenty to like, particularly if they value flexible careers and ship tinkering over modern production polish.
