A smoky cabaret city becomes the stage for a clever puzzle-platform adventure built around light, silhouettes, and childhood imagination. Set in an alternate 1920s world of vaudeville theaters, jazz clubs, magicians, and crooked backstage deals, Contrast follows Dawn, the imaginary friend of a girl named Didi. Its story filters adult problems—broken promises, family tension, ambition, and deception—through Didi’s hopeful perspective, giving the colorful setting a melancholy undertone. The result feels like a playable film-noir fantasy rather than a conventional platformer.

Dawn runs, jumps, and navigates small 3D environments, but her defining ability lets her flatten into a nearby illuminated wall as a living shadow. Once inside the 2D plane, she can walk across projected outlines of objects, climbing impossible routes formed by lamps, spotlights, signs, and furniture. Most challenges revolve around repositioning lights or moving real-world objects to stretch, shrink, or reshape their shadows into usable platforms, then switching dimensions at the right moment. Collectibles and optional memory sequences fill out the world, while the main path stays focused on environmental puzzles and a handful of brisk chase-style platforming scenes rather than combat.

Contrast stands apart because its central mechanic is more than a visual trick: every puzzle asks players to view a room as both a physical space and a projected stage set. The art direction sells that idea beautifully, mixing theatrical backdrops, stylized characters, and warm pools of light with an intimate jazz soundtrack. Some platforming can feel slightly loose, and the campaign is relatively short, but the constantly changing shadow puzzles keep it engaging without becoming overwhelmingly difficult. Fans of Braid, Limbo, and other atmosphere-first indie puzzlers should find plenty to enjoy, especially if they want an accessible, story-driven adventure with a distinct visual identity.
