Cathedral is a deliberately old-school Metroidvania built around lonely ruins, dangerous dungeons, bustling little towns, and a mystery tied to five elemental orbs. Its chunky pixel art and Famitracker soundtrack evoke the NES era, but the mood is more adventurous than nostalgic comfort food: every new corridor can hide a shortcut, a trap, or a clue about the world’s forgotten history.

Rather than leaning on random generation or broad empty spaces, it packs distinct biomes with their own enemy arrangements, platforming ideas, puzzles, and secrets into a cohesive map that rewards curiosity. Bosses serve as demanding milestones, while hidden rooms and optional finds give completion-minded players plenty of reasons to revisit earlier regions after gaining new abilities. Fans of Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight, or classic Castlevania-style exploration will recognize the appeal, though Cathedral favors a tougher, more methodical retro rhythm than modern genre conveniences.
